PRESENTER / INTERPRETER WORKSHOPS / SKITS / ASL

About the Presenter: Pinky Aiello was born Deaf in the Bronx, New York. She currently resides in Portland, Oregon. She has traveled extensively through the U.S., studying Deaf culture and American Sign Language, and is now pursuing her certification as a Certified Deaf Interpreter with the goal of working as a Deaf Advisor, Deaf Consultant, International Signer, Platform Interpreter, and Deaf/Blind Interpreter. She is an enthusiastic supporter of Deaf-Hearing Team interpreting, and is one of the core members of a pilot project to bring the Deaf Community and the Interpreting Community closer together. She has presented at the Interpreter Seminar Spring 2004 at California State University Northridge and the Region V Conference in Portland, Oregon in 2004.

“Direct Communication”: Using bicultural perspectives, the workshop will address cultural differences in deaf and hearing discourse styles, and how these distinct styles affect the interpreter and the interpreting process. Specifically, the age-old issue of directness vs. “bluntness” will be addressed.

“Words, words, words…How about a picture?!:
In this audience participation workshop, the presenter will teach, with video and pictures, how to convey words, thoughts, and emotion through pictures.
Participants, in small groups, will be encouraged and supported to open
themselves up to new ways of conveying information visually, with classifiers, and to
let go of the words they hear.
